The sequel to 2023's "Godzilla Minus One" is also written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki. The story picks up two years later, in 1949, when a new threat, apparently extraterrestrial in nature, now threatens Japan. Named "Ghidorah" by Professor Murakami, the creature soon morphs (after attempts to kill it fail) into "King Ghidorah", the three headed monster originally seen in the 1964 film.
Godzilla himself takes a back seat to Ghidorah, appearing in far less scenes. Fortunately, when he is on screen, he dominates the action. As the new monster wrecks havoc all over Japan, a plan is devised to reawaken Godzilla and lure him into a fight with Ghidorah, with the hope they kill each other. The climatic battle is the highlight of the film.
Much of the cast from "Minus One" return, including Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kocichi, the hero pilot, Minami Hamabe as Noriko, his love interest from the earlier film and now his wife, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, and Sae Nagatani as Akiko, the adopted daughter of Noriko and Kocichi. Min Tanaka, in the pivotal role, as Professor Murakami joins the cast for this sequel.
The film spends quite a bit of time focusing on the human characters, the love story, the hidden agenda, the heroics, and the sacrifices. It takes it's time early on to develop the plot but the action sequences make up for any time you feel the film drag. The special effects are superior to the first film (a bigger budget helps) and there are some thrilling scenes throughout. A dogfight with fighter planes and Ghidorah is a highlight. An imagined sequence of Godzilla destroying New York City is actually pretty disturbing.
Hidden just beneath the action are many subtexts to read deeper into the story. Fans will enjoy the sequel (despite Godzilla's lack of screentime) and given the chance, the film should be seen in IMAX, where the sound and visuals will blow you away.
